I LOVE this US National Park in Maine for so many reasons but one thing I think is really special is the location, it’s so close to so much else to do in Bar Harbor and the other surrounding harbor towns on Mt Desert Island. (Comment your favorite spots on the island!!)

At low tide only, walk to Bar Island via the Bar Island Trail but make sure you walk back before high tide otherwise you’re stranded. If you choose to drive be super mindful of the tides, we saw a car submerged and it happens at least once a year, don’t let it be you. This is an easy, flat walk.

Hike Precipice or Beehive Trail. Sometimes they close one or the other for bird reasons. These are both very challenging hikes with ladders to climb on the side of the mountain. Scary if you’re fearful of heights.

Rent an e-bike in Bar Harbor and take it to the Carriage Trails for a nature roller coaster ride on 45 miles of trails, a half day is plenty (you’ll hit 20 miles probably). Class 1 e-bikes are allowed if you’re bringing your own.

Get a Maine Lobster roll from any shack, if Maine blueberry pie is on the menu get dessert every time. The blueberries hit different here.

Sand Beach is great but usually crowded so get there early or late if you’re trying to beach.

Drive or hike up Cadillac Mountain, you’ll need to make a reservation if you plan to drive. A popular time is sunrise.

Take a nature boat tour to see the island from the water, there are also lobster boat tours!

If you are going for 4th of July a boat tour is a unique way to watch the fireworks over the harbor.

Get drinks at Batson River Fish Camp at the Claremont Hotel in Southwest Harbor, super cute, right on the water.

Visit the Asticou Azalea Garden in Northeast Harbor - free!

We loved Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound in Southwest Harbor!

Explore Bar Harbor! Likely the town you’ll stay in, it’s such a vibe, with lots of touristy shops, restaurants, bars, etc.
