I’ve been running for 13 years. People think I enjoy running and physical activity. This is totally false. I HATE MOVEMENT. I hate walking, running, swimming, cycling—basically anything that requires me to leave my couch. But... I’ve discovered, over the years, the confidence I gain from sticking to a fitness routine is more valuable to me than my couch.

I have struggled with anxiety for as long as I can remember. For some, mental health comes as easy to them as a 7-minute mile comes to an Olympic runner. I am neither (good at mental health or an olympic runner). But, over the past decade, I can truthfully say that running helps to regulate my anxiety before it spirals out of control.

The problem is, Anxiety is a deceitful, manipulative, cunning bitch. She sounds SO LOGICAL: “omg this is CATASTROPHIC what do you MEAN you’re going to go run now? You need to sit your ass down and FIGURE THIS SHIT OUT RIGHT NOW.”

Have you heard this voice too?

I know the moment I give in and skip my workout, it’ll be that much easier for Anxiety to win next time and the time after that, and before I know it, I won’t be running anymore, I won’t be doing strength training anymore, and my own spine will collapse when I sneeze too hard. And, I’ll feel pretty horrible about myself, to boot.

But ignoring Anxiety isn’t always the answer. She’s just going to call again and again until you pick up. So, you cut a deal with her: “Ok, biotch. I hear you. I’ll cut back on my run and possibly my entire gym sesh. Deal?” And before she even has a chance to say yay or nay, you hang up and head out the door, step one foot in front of the other, until her voice begins to fade into the background, replaced by the thudding of your intention.

And then you’ll come back home and see that picture of your badass hahlmuhnee who looks exactly like you and you’ll almost start to cry because it’s the first time you’ve seen a woman in your family who actually looks so much freaking like you but these will be good tears because you’ll realize that you’re a strong bitch, too, and nothing’s gonna stand in your way today.

Nothing.
