An extremely rare look inside ASML’s €350 MILLION EUV lithography machine — where trillion-dollar industries begin. 🤯🔬

This isn’t just a machine.

It’s one of the most complex pieces of engineering ever put into commercial use.

Built by ASML, an EUV lithography system is essentially the machine that helps turn microscopic circuit designs into the patterns that become modern computer chips. And the process happens at a scale that is almost impossible to comprehend.

EUV stands for Extreme Ultraviolet, using light with a wavelength of just 13.5 nanometers. That incredibly short wavelength allows chipmakers to print extremely tiny features onto silicon wafers — a critical step in producing advanced processors.

But generating and controlling that light is where things get absolutely insane. ⚡

Inside the machine, powerful lasers fire at microscopic droplets of molten tin thousands of times per second. Each laser pulse creates a plasma that emits EUV light.

That light then travels through a highly controlled vacuum and is reflected by an intricate series of ultra-precise mirrors.

Why mirrors instead of lenses?

Because EUV light is absorbed by ordinary materials, including glass. So the system has to use specially engineered multilayer mirrors to guide the light toward the wafer.

And the precision is ridiculous.

The machine has to position components with extraordinary accuracy while operating in a controlled environment where even tiny particles can interfere with the process.

Eventually, the EUV light reaches a silicon wafer coated with a light-sensitive material called photoresist. The machine transfers the desired circuit pattern onto the wafer, creating the foundation for the layers that eventually become a modern semiconductor.
