Hisonni Mustafa seems to be on one of those career trajectories that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

The UNLV School of Cinematic Arts student and Las Vegas filmmaker has been named one of the inaugural Grand Prize winners of Tyler Perry Studios’ Dream Collective, an initiative created to identify, mentor and support emerging filmmakers.

Through the program, Mustafa wrote and directed the original narrative short film Gospel For Ghosts, produced with the support and resources of Tyler Perry Studios.

This month, Mustafa traveled to Toronto in connection with the film, participating in the inaugural TIFF: The Market, the Toronto International Film Festival’s first official global content market. The opportunity placed Mustafa and his work in front of an international film community at an important moment in his career.

And this latest recognition is far from an isolated win.

In 2026, Mustafa received the Directors Guild of America Student Film Award for Outstanding Documentary and Special Jury Recognition at Tribeca X for his PSA Bang Bang, which has also earned honors from the Webby Awards, Telly Awards, Pacific Southwest Emmys and Communicator Awards.

He is also a 2026 Rideback RISE Fellow and has participated in programs with the Writers Guild Foundation, Television Academy Foundation and Commercial Directors Diversity Program.

His feature film Take Out Girl premiered at Cinequest, screened at more than 60 festivals worldwide, won 21 awards, including Best Director at the American Black Film Festival, and was later acquired for distribution on Hulu.

For a filmmaker still building his career out of Las Vegas, Mustafa’s momentum is hard to miss. With major industry programs, awards and opportunities continuing to stack up, his career is looking extremely promising and it feels like there is still much more ahead.

Additional details surrounding Gospel For Ghosts are expected from Tyler Perry Studios in the coming months.
