On Wednesday, September 16th, Wentworth Institute of Technology announced the hiring of Jason Smith as new head coach for the men’s ice hockey program.

Smith, a native of West Yarmouth, MA, was a three-year player for Salem State from 1995-1998 after spending one season at UMass Amherst (DI). From the stats according to EliteProspects, Brown put together 11 points (6G/5A) in 15 games with the Minutemen and then had a 30-point season 13G/17A) in 27 games at Salem State in his first season with the Vikings. He served as team captain his junior and senior seasons.

Smith began his coaching career in the 1999-2000 season as he’d join his alma mater as an assistant coach and stay in that role for four seasons. He’d then take on the same role at Babson College starting in the 2003-2004 season and hold that position for another four seasons.

His transition to the Division I level would come before the 2007-2008 season as Smith would become an assistant coach with the College of the Holy Cross, spending seven seasons with the Crusaders serving as recruiting coordinator and focusing on forward help. Smith would then shift over to Northeastern University for the 2014-2015 season, overseeing the defense and penalty-kill. He’d help the Huskies tie the school-record for most wins in a season (2018-2019) as well as capture two Hockey East titles in 2016 & 2019.

After five seasons with Northeastern, Smith would join Brown University as an assistant coach for the 2019-2020 season. Over his seven seasons, he’d assist in helping the Bears host a home playoff game (2005) for the first time since 2019, post a 5-game winning streak for the first time since the 2009-2010 season and sweep a regular-season series against Yale for the first time since 2004-2005. Smith finished his tenure at Brown as the interim head coach, taking over on January 28th, as the Bears would finish the season with a 2-7-2 record.
