⛽ California gas prices are now so high that some stations are displaying numbers almost identical to the supposedly apocalyptic prices seen in 2007’s I Am Legend.

The movie, which takes place in 2012, features a Mobil sign showing $6.63 for regular, $6.87 for special and $6.95 for premium gasoline.

Fast-forward to September 21, 2026, and AAA lists California’s statewide averages at roughly $6.17 regular, $6.39 midgrade and $6.59 premium.

The California 76 station pictured here goes even further, advertising $6.37 regular, $6.67 plus and $6.87 premium, putting it directly inside the movie’s fictional price range.

That $6.87 premium price is literally identical to the $6.87 middle-grade price displayed on the Mobil sign in I Am Legend.

Diesel is even more extreme, with California’s statewide average sitting around $8.42 per gallon, essentially at its highest recorded level.

For perspective, the movie was released nearly 19 years ago, when numbers approaching $7 per gallon looked like a believable detail for a dystopian future rather than something drivers might actually encounter.

California’s higher fuel costs are influenced by everything from global crude prices and disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz to the state’s isolated fuel market and specialized gasoline blend.

Regular gas still hasn’t beaten California’s statewide record of about $6.44 set in June 2022, but the resemblance between today’s station boards and the movie is still wild.

Did you ever think the “apocalyptic” gas prices from I Am Legend would actually look normal at a California gas station?

What are your thoughts? 🤔💭
