🚨 The U.S. House has passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, moving a federal requirement for AM access in new passenger vehicles one step closer to becoming law.

H.R. 979 passed by voice vote on September 15 and would require automakers to provide access to AM broadcasts at no additional charge to buyers.

The bill is aimed especially at EVs, because some manufacturers have removed or planned to remove standard AM reception from electric models.

Supporters argue AM remains important during hurricanes, wildfires, blackouts and other emergencies because broadcasts can still reach drivers when cellular or internet service is disrupted.

The legislation would also require a federal review of AM radio’s role in distributing emergency alerts through the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System.

If enacted, the Department of Transportation would have one year to issue the rule, and the requirement would sunset eight years after enactment.

The CBO estimates the mandate would affect roughly 2 to 2.5 million vehicles per year and cost manufacturers several million dollars annually.

The House vote does not make AM radio mandatory yet, because the legislation still needs Senate passage and presidential approval before becoming law.

The Senate version has 60 cosponsors and previously advanced through the Senate Commerce Committee before being placed on the Senate calendar.

In an era of streaming, satellite radio and always-connected dashboards, should AM still be required in every new car if it provides a backup channel during emergencies?

What are your thoughts? 🤔💭
