Volkswagen has revealed the Mission Efficiency, a near-production electric prototype designed to push EV efficiency to an entirely new level.

Volkswagen says the car has set three world records, including a drag coefficient of just 0.158, which it describes as a new benchmark for a road-approved vehicle.

During an officially documented 1,278.36 km test drive, it averaged just 6.89 kWh/100 km excluding charging losses, or 7.51 kWh/100 km when charging losses were included.

Under an ideal constant-speed test, consumption dropped even further to just 6.48 kWh/100 km.

Despite the extreme numbers, the prototype uses a 54.9 kWh battery and 99 kW electric motor derived from the same MEB+ technology being developed for vehicles like the ID. Polo.

Its teardrop-shaped body, covered rear wheels, active cooling flaps, fully enclosed underbody and specially developed low-resistance tires all help reduce the energy required to move through the air.

Volkswagen even integrated a 370-watt solar system into the roof and rear glass that can contribute up to 30 km of additional range per day under favorable conditions.

Could extreme efficiency be more important to the future of electric cars than simply fitting larger batteries?

What are your thoughts? 🤔💭
