This #MuseumMonday, we would like to take a moment to remember James Deering, Charles Deering’s half‑brother and the owner of Vizcaya, who passed away on September 21, 1925, at the age of 65.

James Deering was born in South Paris, Maine on November 12, 1859. He received schooling in Portland, Maine, and later attended Northwestern University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At age 21, he entered the Deering Harvester Company, where he gained experience in manufacturing and sales. After the withdrawal of his father from the company in 1901, James, Charles Deering, and Richard F. Howe managed the business until its merger with the McCormick Harvester Company and other firms to form the International Harvester Company in 1902. James continued as vice‑president of International Harvester until 1919 and later served as a director.

In addition to his business activities, James Deering established a residence in Miami, Florida named Vizcaya, located roughly 13 miles north of Charles Deering’s estate. Inspired by the Villa Rezzonico in Bassano, Italy, he shared Charles’s admiration for Mediterranean architecture. James collected art, including works by several of the same artists favored by Charles, such as John Singer Sargent and Ramon Casas. The image shown is a reproduction of John Singer Sargent’s Portrait of James Deering. James also participated in multiple civic and social organizations based in Chicago, including the University Club, South Shore Country Club, Saddle and Cycle Club, and Casino Clubs of Chicago.

James passed away unmarried and at sea on board the steamship Paris while returning from France to America on September 21, 1925.
