The last couple of weeks have been the hardest stretch of this breastfeeding journey. Or any of my breastfeeding journeys.

Both boys got sick. I got a clogged duct that I’m pretty sure has turned into another infection — I had mastitis two months ago and this feels familiar in all the wrong ways. The boys are teething, or going through a leap, or a sleep regression, or all three at once because why not. The perfect storm.

In my breastfeeding journeys before this one, I never had more than occasional engorgement in the beginning. This has been a different experience entirely. And I won’t pretend it hasn’t been a hard pill to swallow — physically, mentally, emotionally.

I ordered a pump this week. For the first time. Just in case I need a break. Just to have the option. The physical and mental load of exclusively breastfeeding twins on no sleep is catching up to me, and I finally had to admit that having an exit ramp doesn’t mean I have to take it.

I’m writing this partly for you and partly so I can read it myself and maybe start to believe it:

It’s okay if my plans change.
It’s okay if they don’t.

The goal was never to hold myself hostage to any of it. The goal was to feed my babies. However that ends up looking. 🤍

Breastfeeding mamas — has there been a moment you had to give yourself permission to let go of the plan? ↓
