Chadwick Boseman (born November 29, 1976) was an American actor, playwright, and filmmaker who became internationally known for portraying influential figures and iconic characters, including Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in Get on Up, Thurgood Marshall in Marshall, and King T’Challa in Marvel’s Black Panther. A graduate of Howard University, Boseman returned to his alma mater in 2018 to deliver the university’s commencement address and reflect on the struggles, setbacks, and experiences that shaped his own journey.

In this video, Boseman speaks to the graduating class about choosing purpose over simply pursuing a job or career. He explains that the struggles people face along the way can shape them for their purpose, drawing from his own experiences in the entertainment industry and the obstacles he faced before his breakthrough. He then delivers one of the most powerful messages of the speech, explaining that when something is meant for you, the obstacles standing in your way do not have to determine your future. Boseman encourages the graduates to embrace the harder path, even when it comes with more failures than successes, because that journey can ultimately lead to greater meaning, victory, and glory.

His message is about purpose, perseverance, faith, failure, success, and continuing forward even when the path becomes difficult. Chadwick Boseman’s words continue to resonate because his own life and career became an example of using your experiences, challenges, and opportunities to create something meaningful.
