The US plans to re-establish a mothballed military base in southern Greenland and establish another on the island’s east coast, according to people familiar with the matter.⁣
⁣
The sites are Narsarsuaq, home to the former US Bluie West One base, and Mestersvig, a military outpost currently used by Denmark’s Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.⁣
⁣
The bases are part of a new agreement expected to be signed by the US, Denmark and Greenland at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.⁣
⁣
The agreement’s text has not been made public, and sources said details could still change before it is signed.⁣
⁣
The White House declined to comment on the specific plans, saying the agreement would “secure and defend the security of Greenland and the United States.”⁣
