Southern Miss and Auburn go way back. Back to when both schools went by different names.

Mississippi Southern and Alabama Polytechnic Institute first met in 1946 at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery. The orange-clad Auburn Tigers, along with freshman Travis Tidwell, pulled out the 13-12 victory.

The two would face off the following two years in Montgomery, splitting the games. The matchup wasn't scheduled again until 1959, the first time on Auburn's campus at Cliff Hare Stadium.

Historically, this isn't one of those "easy win" kind of matchups. Look through the matchup scores and you'll see a lot of tight games. Southern Miss has won five of those games, including 1990 with quarterback Brett Favre leading the Golden Eagles to a 13-12 victory. Even without Farve, Southern Miss would return to Jordan-Hare and get a 10-9 victory.

The last two meetings in 2008 and 2018 were impacted by weather. The 2008 meeting saw a brief rain shower hit at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The most recent game was delayed right before halftime for almost three hours because of lightning. A torrential downpour soaked the field, making for a wet second half. Both games resulted in incredible wet-weather photos, including Christian Tutt having a facemask full of mud after intercepting a pass.

Uniform-wise, this series has seen a good bit. That first meeting in 1946 saw Auburn in navy helmets and pants with orange jerseys. Orange jerseys returned for the 1948 meeting and again in 1980, marking one of the two victories for Doug Barfield's alternate tops. Auburn also wore orange and blue helmets at the same time in the 1948 game, with orange helmets worn by the QB, RBs, and WRs, while the offensive line and defense wore navy. Position-specific helmet colors were common during this era.

The 1964 and 1965 games had both teams wearing player numbers on the helmets. Auburn would adopt the AU logo in 1966, but it wasn't until 1970 that Southern Miss saw the new helmet logos.

This weekend's game marks the 24th meeting all-time between these two programs.
