Motorcycling’s most feared nickname wasn’t earned on the road. Kawasaki’s own American staff invented it — a test rider and an ad manager — and used it to sell bikes.

The period press actually defended these machines. Cycle World wrote that “dangerous is no longer a good word” for the H2. What’s true is stranger: Honda built an electronic limiter into the NSR250 that pulled ignition timing above 180 km/h, then sold a card through its race division to remove it. Yamaha detuned its own home-market RZ500 from 88 hp to 64.
