Mike LaRocco won the 1993 AMA 500 National Championship. The AMA then abolished the class. He wore the #1 plate exactly once.

Kawasaki’s answer was to stop developing the KX500 entirely — the 1988 platform ran to 2004 with only detail changes. 220 lb, 55-60 hp at the wheel, roughly a modern 450’s peak power arriving all at once. Motocross gave up on it. The desert didn’t: Team Green took nine consecutive overall Baja 1000 wins.
