Soichiro Honda called two-strokes “stink wheels". His engineers built one anyway – after hours, in secret, under the codename Project 335. They bought a Husqvarna as the target. They raced the prototype in disguise in 1971, and it broke down — and the press recognised it anyway.

Two years later the bike reached America.

Then Honda’s own factory team refused the works racers and demanded showroom bikes instead.
