## Caption

In 1984, Kawasaki built a motorcycle nobody had seen before. Sixteen valves. Liquid-cooled inline-four. 115 horsepower. 150 mph. It wasn't a race bike — it was a machine anyone could walk into a dealership and buy.

Every other manufacturer now had a target. The concept of the modern superbike — liquid-cooled, high-revving, aerodynamically developed — was defined by this machine.

Tom Cruise rode one in Top Gun two years later. Kawasaki kept it in production until 2003. Nineteen years. The concept never changed.
