He won thirteen world championships. He refused to call it thirteen. He called it twelve plus one.

Angel Nieto — Spanish, seven 50cc titles, six 125cc titles. Three different manufacturers. A career spanning twenty years. Still racing in his forties.

His record was only passed by Valentino Rossi. But Rossi won his titles in the premier class. Nieto built his entire legacy on machines under 125cc.

In 2017, he died in a quad bike accident in Ibiza. He was seventy years old.
