In 1980, Kawasaki brought their most powerful Grand Prix machine to the 500cc World Championship.

The KR500. A square-four two-stroke with everything needed to win — except one thing. The chassis never matched the engine. The front ran wide. The rear stepped out. Even their best rider, Kork Ballington, said it demanded more than he could consistently give.

Kawasaki never won a 500cc GP race. They withdrew before the decade ended.
