WSBK rules said you had to sell 500 road-legal copies of your race bike. Yamaha built 500 of the most race-focused motorcycles any factory had ever sold, priced almost nobody out of, and shipped them to dealers.

Scott Russell won the 1993 World Superbike Championship on the race version. The road bike was discontinued the same year.
