Here are 10 things you might hear as an independent artist that should immediately raise a red flag 🚩

❌ “Trust me.” Trust isn’t the issue, trust without transparency is. Legitimate partners will gladly discuss contracts, costs, rights, and exact deliverables.

❌ “You don’t need a contract.” Verbal promises won't protect you. If money, royalties, or ownership are involved, get it in writing.

❌ “You need to decide today.” Pressure tactics are a major trap. Never let someone rush you into a commitment.

❌ “You’ll get exposure instead of payment.” If someone else is profiting off your work, you should be too.

❌ “This is just how the music industry works.” The industry’s history of bad deals isn’t a justification for you to accept one.

❌ “We’ll make the money back once you blow up.” Hidden fees and undefined debts will drain your future royalties. 

❌ “You can always get your masters back later.” Never sign away your ownership based on vague, future promises.

❌ “I’m doing you a favour.” If that sentence keeps appearing when you ask for transparency, the “favour” probably has strings attached.

❌ “I can end your career with one phone call.” This is intimidation, not partnership. Document these conversations immediately.
