The craziest thing about a still life is… sometimes it isn’t one. 👀

Los Angeles artist Vita Kari (@vitakari) creates analog illusions that look like digital effects. For #OpenCall, they drew inspiration from the bright colors, flattened forms, and dreamlike space of Henri Matisse’s “Still Life with Sleeping Woman,” as well as the playful visual language of his later paper cutouts.

“I love that I’m taking this painting and moving it across mediums again. It starts as an oil painting, I translate it into physical paper, that paper initially reads as a digital effect, and then my hand comes through and reveals that it was physical all along. I love the idea that the artwork is almost coming through the screen.” — Vita Kari
