there is something about django unchained that feels almost biblical to me. at its core, django is a story about freedom, beginning in chains and ending on horseback. he loses almost everything, finds his way back to the person he loves, and then walks straight back into hell to get her out. it’s obviously a very tarantino way of storytelling; blood, revenge, absurd amounts of violence, intense dialogue, a soundtrack that has absolutely no business going as hard as it does and leonardo dicaprio casually giving one of the most disturbing performances of his career. underneath all of that, there is this almost faith driven structure to django’s journey. bondage to freedom, purpose, failure and rising up once more even the religious imagery throughout the film is interesting because tarantino constantly puts ideas of faith, sin, judgement and damnation next to some truly horrific human behaviour. there is something particularly fucked up about watching people use the language of god and the bible while treating other human beings as property. the film doesn’t exactly hand you a neat moral lesson, however it makes contradiction impossible to ignore. tarantino took the mythology of the spaghetti western, mixed it with blaxploitation, revenge cinema, old hollywood westerns and his own completely unhinged filmmaking language, and turned django into a character that feels larger than the film around him. i read that he had wanted to make this kind of western for years, and the influence of italian director sergio corbucci is extremely prevalent  what a masterpiece.  django unchained was nominated for best picture, tarantino got an oscar for original screenplay and christoph waltz took home the supporting actor academy award. critics currently sit at 87% on rotten tomatoes, with the film still regularly being ranked among tarantino’s strongest work.  django spent the entire film being told what he is, where he belongs and what he is allowed to be, and by the end, he’s literally riding away as the person he decided he was going to become. #django #djangounchained #quentintarantino #edit #fyp
