Our Ghana service turned three last month. Daniel Marfo, SVP for Zipline Africa has seen Zipline move through challenging hurdles to inevitably become a transformative nationwide supply chain solution. 

“I saw Zipline’s potential almost immediately: my love of technology and seeing what it could do for health. I visited a hospital in Rwanda and saw the Zip flying so fast. It landed a package in exactly the right place and I knew right then - we no longer have to be limited by bad roads or weather, overstocking/understocking inventory. You just need a single request, and this incredible technology can deliver. It was mind blowing. 

After being convinced, I spoke to Ghana’s parliament to tell them about what Zipline could do…. It didn’t make sense to people yet. Within three hours of the parliament meeting, we were all over the radio… so many negative stories. That meeting spiraled into the most difficult three weeks of my professional life. Looking back, we should have listened to concerns and addressed those concerns before moving ahead. Now we had to get people to go from doubters to believers. Once we got the contract signed, there was a PR storm. Simultaneously, we were trying to recruit a local team of Ghanians to build this solution for our country. We were six weeks away from launch and our nest was a mess - it felt like we were so behind. 

But that’s when some of the values of Zipline began to shine. Servant leadership and extreme ownership - the people we hired, who didn’t need to even bother about certain things outside of their purview, owned them extremely. You can’t innovate in the dark. And on the day of the launch, everyone was there. The distribution center looked perfect, the drones flew beautifully - we had this incredible event and what I really thought was the people who work here and how fast they moved from learning, to leading, to becoming technical experts. Our team is still blowing my mind - expanding service to practically unreachable locations and new use cases.. It’s an amazing thing to be a part of. “
