“Last fall, there was a lot of talk about an incoming demand hike with all the new delivery sites in Ghana. We wanted to be proactive and see where our fulfillment operations are going to break and how to get ahead of it. So the team went out to Ghana for a few weeks and held an innovation week. Our team was packaging and managing orders next to operators to learn what it’s like in the warehouse: what are the stressors, what could go wrong, and what just sucks to do.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An example—When operators got orders, they had to see what was in every order and figure out what was going to go into every box. Now, the system predetermines what goes in what box rather than eyeballing. The boxes are determined based on size, weight, and restrictions on what can be packed together ie. cold chain, blood only packed with blood.

That week was awesome because we could build a real bond with the operations team. That mutual observation was great because it pointed to places the process was failing. We took those processes and completely revamped the fulfillment systems around it. It was actually a real improvement. People typically hate change, but it was operators who had been asking for these changes and we worked together on what the solutions looked like. People were totally happy about it. That was a huge win and very satisfying for engineering, and for operators who were able to share their ideas. We reached the point where our fulfillment software and processes aren’t going to slow us down when we have increased demand.

At Zipline, the culture of collaboration and ‘we’re all in this together and trying to reach the same goal’ is so strong. There are no other agendas. We just want what’s best for the customer and we move in that direction.”
