Blaise Musabe joined our Fulfillment Operations team in 2017, and is now part of the Product Operations team that serves as a bridge between the Fulfillment Operators and our Fulfillment Engineering team. Before joining Zipline, he worked as a corporate sales executive in one of the digital advertising companies in Rwanda.

“The greatest strength we have at Zipline is learning from each other. One example of this is how closely operators and engineers work together. In most companies, an operator is a strict person who will focus on executing procedures as written. At Zipline, we are executing, but at the same time working on small improvements of the systems we have on hand. It’s rare to find this quality in a company, but it’s amazing because if an operator is giving inputs for the engineer to design, the product will be perfect for the user.

Another attitude that I’ve seen at Zipline and nowhere else is that people learn new skills and then teach them to others. I was learning some basic data analysis when I met David Mandelbaum. David had this amazing project of reviving what we used to call the “time-to-launch dashboard” that calculated and analyzed operational efficiency. He used a lot of cool queries and I was like, ‘wow I can learn so much from this person.’ But I was tentative to ask for help because in my mind I thought that David was so busy and wouldn’t find time to teach me. So I approached him with the expectation of being pushed back. To my surprise, David came and scheduled 1 hour every week to review all his work with me. From what I learned, I started building simple dashboards and improving the tool he’d built. At some point, I saw that David was building something else using Python, and I thought maybe I could use this too to increase the reliability of our Fulfilment dashboards. Again, he taught me, despite the load on his plate, and from there I built some of the tools we are currently using in operations.

I think that Zipline is an infinite pool of knowledge and skills if you want to learn. People are excited to listen and learn, and also willing to share everything they have.”
