Maggie Jim is our Strategic Finance Lead and joined in 2016. She helped to launch our first operations in Rwanda and has worn many hats, including Fulfillment Operations and Chief of Staff. She now focuses on making Zipline financially competitive and sustainable. Maggie is from Hong Kong, and before joining Zipline she worked as a management consultant for consumer product companies. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“It has been cool to see how we’ve grown in how we think about the customer. Initially, we spent a lot of time iterating on the drone, but, eventually we realized that customers really only care about the package - receiving the right products at the right time. Early on, we noticed that increasing the availability and responsiveness of the supply chain was changing the way healthcare workers manage care. Since health facilities were no longer limited by their own cold chain storage capabilities, they had access to more products than before. They could even plan their needs down to the hour, versus weekly or monthly forecasts. The first hospital was able to cut their blood stock to one-third of what they used to store and reduce waste to essentially 0. Most importantly, health workers could focus on what they do best -- providing care for patients. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One thing that stood out about Zipline was the culture of fast iteration. We’re not fancy. The first distribution center was literally three shipping containers and a tent. Our original fulfillment system was built on google sheets. As Keenan would say, ‘chances are, you are wrong about what the customer wants.’ It’s our job to learn and continue to improve systems and processes to bolster our reliability and trust with our customers. Thankfully, we now have a whole dedicated operations and software team to support fulfillment. The customer experience has improved by leaps and bounds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s something that I carry with me throughout Zipline - figuring out how we get to good/not perfect. ‘What is the fastest way to get something started so we can decide if this is the right path?’ Focus on burning down the biggest risks, then we can start pursuing that path a hundred percent.”
