I was supposed to study business in high school, but went to the science classes instead. No one asked me, and my parents didn’t even know. At the end of the first term the school realized that I was in the wrong classes but let me continue. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I fell in love with GIS because you can make meaningful insights from data that people appreciate. One of the last projects I did was a road classification project to map every single road in London. We had to map every junction to differentiate the road types and tell people which roads have better traffic flow.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I started really liking Zipline when I came for the onsite interview. Zipline felt like a really happy place - even for non-emergency situations you always see people hurrying to launch or recover the drone. It made me wonder how everyone was so excited about work. When I joined, I realized it's because at Zipline, values are not just a space on the wall. By the time you leave Academy in Rwanda, you breathe servant leadership and continuous improvement. You see the rest of your teammates constantly improving themselves and each other and contributing new ideas to the company, and it pushes you to do that as well. You can see this on our GIS team very clearly - we were the first people hired to this team at Zipline, and in just 6 months our process has become so much better based on our feedback, ideas and the support we get from the whole team. Now we can plan 100+ flight paths to new hospitals in a week.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At Zipline, our team is crucial because we provide the GIS data for the route the drone should take to deliver to a new hospital. We need to make sure there are no trees, towers and other obstacles in the flight path of the drone, among other things. I love GIS but what’s made it even better for me is that I never thought I could use GIS to save lives - I thought that was limited to doctors and nurses and health professionals. Doing what you love to save lives is very fulfilling and that’s what gives me energy every day.
