William Nkusi is one of our fearless Zipline Academy Leads who has been responsible for training over 115 participants to date (keep in mind that Zipline was only 120 people when William joined the team!). 🌟🌟🌟 “Where we are now as a company is not only because people pushed themselves to the limits to squeeze more working hours into a day. People also stayed intensely focused on serving as ‘values role models’ for our new hires. We knew when setting up Zipline Academy that in addition to technical skills, we also would train on company values. I feel it’s a privilege to be able to do this for every new hire we make.

When I joined as a Fulfillment Operator, there was little training structure in place. It took 1-2 months for me to really understand my job. Now, people spend 2-3 weeks in intensive training and become certified. Now, most operations are run by people who passed through Academy.

The evolution of our training model is actually a great example of us living our company values. We were building a training program from scratch, with little time and little experience in curriculum development or facilitation. So what did we do? We started small with groups of 3-4 people. We asked for direct feedback on the curriculum and sessions and made improvements. We got feedback that we needed a cultural sensitivity training when we launch new country teams due to people joining with all sorts of different backgrounds, so we added it. We got feedback that we needed more practical examples of living our values, so to teach extreme ownership, we appointed a Daily Lead for the Academy trainees to own specific tasks. To teach customer obsession, we started bringing everyone to a health facility to witness a delivery.

Besides training new hires, we’re also investing in training other trainers. We call them ‘Jedis.’ They will be what helps us really scale Academy into new places around the world. I like that instead of just hiring people who have a background in training, we actually empower the teams who deeply understand our operations and culture. They will be the ones who can inspire and help Zipline values translate across oceans and languages.
