Brittany Hume Charm is on our Business Development team and leads Zipline’s relationships with global health partners. “Before Zipline I worked as a funder in global health, identifying, funding, and supporting scalable global health solutions. I was privileged to visit communities around the world to learn why health access and quality are so challenging at the ‘last mile.’ While I saw there was no silver bullet, there were important pieces of the puzzle - like community health worker models, mobile phones, and context-appropriate medicines and medical devices. However, after driving hours on rough roads to reach these clinics, we’d often arrive to find half-empty pharmacy shelves. No matter how well you train or connect healthcare workers, they’ll have their hands tied trying to treat patients without essential and emergency medicines. The reality of distance and infrastructure was discouraging.

I became involved in conversations about using drone technology for medical deliveries, but prevailing sentiment was that it would take a decade. Then I came across Zipline the day after it came out of stealth in 2016 and I was immediately impressed. It was clear that the product and service had been shaped according to the global health needs the team had seen in the field. That was 3 and a half years ago.

With Zipline being operational at national scale in 2 countries, it feels like we can make universal access to medicines a reality. Now when I drive for hours to visit the clinics we serve, I watch as a Zip delivers a package to the clinic’s doorstep with an anti-rabies vaccine for a child bitten by a dog, or an emergency blood transfusion for a mom in labor, or essential medicines to avoid a stockout. It feels like a miracle every time.

And what’s fascinating is that Zipline is a great example of reverse innovation. We started in Africa with our drone technology, and have been building customizable fulfillment solutions for markets and customers around the world. We’re already starting to see really interesting conversations about the potential of this among public and private sector health system leaders, from India 🇮🇳 to the USA🇺🇸.”
