Climate technology venture Biochar Industrial Group has raised $1.5 million in pre-seed capital to scale its Biochar-as-a-Service model across Sub-Saharan Africa. The round was led by BREEGA, with participation from Catalyst Fund and non-dilutive backing from the Mulago Foundation.
Founded by Releaf Earth executives Ikenna Nzewi, Uzoma Ayogu, and Isaiah Udotong, the startup partners with commercial food processors to capture agricultural waste. By converting biomass like nut shells and husks into biochar using on-site pyrolysis units, BIG locks carbon away long-term while producing a soil conditioner for depleted farmland.
The team plans to use the capital to expand factory partnerships, deploy monitoring systems, and generate high-integrity carbon removal credits for the global market.
