Egypt has introduced a regulatory framework barring social media platforms from creating or activating independent accounts for children under 13.

Issued jointly by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, the rules also mandate an unalterable "Safe Mode" for users between 13 and 15 years old. Platforms must integrate age-verification mechanisms and review existing accounts to bring non-compliant profiles into alignment within three months.

The measure marks one of North Africa's strict digital safety interventions to date, shifting accountability onto consumer tech platforms to build stronger age-gating safeguards and data privacy controls.
