Warren Buffett is stepping down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway after more than 50 years in the role, the company announced Friday. The 96-year-old legendary investor, often called the Oracle of Omaha, will become chairman emeritus effective immediately while remaining a member of the board of directors. His son, Howard Buffett, a Berkshire director since 1993, has been elected as the new chairman under a long-standing succession plan. Greg Abel, who took over as chief executive officer on January 1, 2026, will continue to lead day-to-day operations. Susan Decker remains lead independent director. In a letter to shareholders released Friday, Buffett wrote, "Father Time always wins. He has, however, been generous with me. He has given me the opportunity to see Berkshire reach a point where I am more confident than ever about what lies ahead." On his son's new role, Buffett wrote, "Greg runs the company; Howard will guard its culture and values – both worth more than anything on our balance sheet. Think of Howard as a policy the shareholders own and hope never to claim against." Buffett took over what was then a struggling New England textile mill in 1965 and built it into one of the most valuable companies in the world, worth nearly $1 trillion today with roughly 400,000 employees across its subsidiaries. Under his leadership, Berkshire compounded returns at approximately 19.7% annually nearly double the S&P 500 over the same period. The conglomerate reported $44.5 billion in operating earnings in 2025. Buffett stepped down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of 2025, handing the reins to Abel. In his most recent shareholder letter, Buffett acknowledged that he moves more slowly and reads with increasing difficulty, but still visits the Omaha office five days a week. Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares were trading around $[507.79](claim:24), down [-0.28](claim:25)% from the previous close of $[509.20](claim:26), a muted market reaction reflecting the fact that this succession has been long-telegraphed. $BRK.B.
