Most business owners think 50% rep retention is bad. It's actually about as good as it gets.

If you're running a commission-based sales team, here's the range you're really working with: best-case orgs land around 50% retention. Most small businesses are sitting at 20-33%.

That's not a red flag. That's the baseline.

The real question isn't "why are we losing so many reps." It's "where do we fall in that range, and why." The answer usually comes down to a few things: how strong the opportunity actually is, how good the comp plan is, and how solid your onboarding, training, and management are. Orgs that get those right push toward the top of the range. Orgs with a long ramp time, a long sales cycle, or weak early income end up at the bottom.

If you're at 20% and assuming that means something is broken, you might just be looking at the wrong lever. It's rarely one big fix — it's usually ramp time, cycle length, or early-stage income working against you.

Action: Pull your last 12 months of rep starts and calculate your actual retention rate. Then look specifically at how long it takes a new rep to close their first deal — that ramp time is often the biggest lever on where you land in that range.
