#GhostfaceKillah’s “SUPREME CLIENTELE” is, without a doubt, one of the greatest Hip Hop albums all time.

Ghost’s lyrics solidified the project as a classic. But the beats on the album? They laid the foundation.

On “Ironman,” Ghost utilised production only from Wu-Tang’s rza. But on his sophomore album “Supreme Clientele,” Ghost dug deep and broadened the selection of producers whom he enlisted for the project. Leaning on JuJu from the Beatnuts, Hassan of the UMC’s, The Hitmen and several Wu-Tang affiliates. Whilst the other producers produced for the album, RZA and Ghostface did the majority of mixing themselves on “Supreme Clientele,” this process meant that both RZA and Ghost re-compiled and re-worked many of the album’s beats. RZA explained “usually a producer comes in, makes a beat, mixes it and gives the direction for it. But not with this album. That’s why you get that special sound. I just needle and threaded the beats all together.” This approach would result in critical praise for the album’s fluidity and cohesiveness.

At 92BRICKS, you’ll see us praising Dre’s production efforts on “The Chronic” and “2001” often. But if there’s a Dark Horse and an often unappreciated competitor worthy of the title of “Greatest Hip Hop album in terms of production,” Ghostface’s “Supreme Clientele” stands as possibly the best contender out there.

What are your thoughts on the production on Ghostface Killah’s “Supreme Clientele?” Do you regard this as one of the greatest, most unique, stand-out albums in terms of Hip Hop production? Let us know in the comments.
