UNESCO and the Holy See share a relationship spanning nearly eight decades, rooted in a common commitment to education, culture, human dignity and peace.

From the Holy See’s participation in UNESCO’s General Conference in 1948 and the appointment of its first Permanent Observer in 1952, to the historic visit of Pope John Paul II in 1980, this dialogue has continued across generations. Today, cooperation extends to some of the most pressing issues of our time, including artificial intelligence, cultural heritage and dialogue.

On 25 September, a new chapter will begin as Pope Leo XIV visits UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, the first papal visit to the Organization in more than 40 years.

Ahead of this historic moment, swipe through the milestones that have shaped the relationship between UNESCO and the Holy See. ➡️
