Enzo Francescoli: nicknamed "El Príncipe" (The Prince), was the defining South American playmaker of his era. Operating with an upright, effortless gliding posture, precise first touch, and lethal finishing, Francescoli anchored Uruguay’s golden generation in continental tournaments and established himself as one of River Plate’s greatest foreign imports.

Key career statistics:
527 total club appearances, 198 club goals, 73 senior international caps, 17 international goals for Uruguay, 137 goals in 233 matches across two spells for River Plate, 3 Copa América titles (1983, 1987, 1995), 1 Copa Libertadores championship (1996), 5 Argentine Primera División championships (1985–86, 1991 Apertura, 1994 Apertura, 1996 Apertura, 1997 Clausura), 1 French Division 1 title with Olympique de Marseille (1989–90), 2 South American Footballer of the Year awards (1984, 1995).

During his lone season at Marseille in 1989–90, a teenage Zinedine Zidane would sit in the Stade Vélodrome stands studying Francescoli's chest control, turns, and tempo. Zidane admitted to mirroring his entire movement profile on the Uruguayan.

When the two faced off at the 1996 Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo—Zidane for Juventus, Francescoli captaining River Plate—Zidane swapped shirts at full-time and famously slept in Francescoli’s jersey that night. Zidane later named his firstborn son Enzo in tribute.
