Nebraska’s men’s and women’s basketball programs are entering the new season with different recent results but a similar goal: build on last year while avoiding the temptation to dwell on it.

The men’s program is coming off the best season in school history. Nebraska won 28 games, finished 15-5 in Big Ten play and earned the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory before reaching the Sweet 16.

Fred Hoiberg was named National Coach of the Year, but the Huskers will have a different look as they pursue another postseason run. All-Big Ten selection Pryce Sandfort and Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year Braden Frager headline a new group expected to carry Nebraska forward.

Hoiberg said the program cannot allow last season’s breakthrough to become a distraction.

“If you still think about that, you’re done before it even starts,” Hoiberg said. “So yeah, we’re beyond it, and this team, they’ve got lofty goals, and they should.”

Nebraska’s success has raised expectations, both internally and around the Big Ten. Hoiberg said those expectations are a sign of progress, but he also knows the schedule will not allow the Huskers to coast on what they accomplished a year ago.

“That’s where you want to be as a program,” Hoiberg said. “Our league has improved. You look at the rosters in our league and the length in our schedule with the nonconference teams that we are playing, it’s going to be a grind, and we better be on point.”

The Huskers’ challenge will be replacing the production and experience that carried last season’s team while quickly establishing a new identity. Sandfort brings all-conference credentials, while Frager provides a proven spark and versatility after earning recognition as the league’s top reserve.

The women’s program enters the season seeking a stronger finish after an up-and-down 2025-26 campaign.

Nebraska finished 19-13 and earned its third straight NCAA Tournament berth, but the Huskers’ season changed after a 13-0 start. Nebraska won only six more games, finished 7-11 in Big Ten play and lost to Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Amy Williams believes the roster has the talent and hunger to take a step forward.

First-team All-Big Ten guard Britt Prince returns to lead the Huskers, while former Big Ten Freshman of the Year Natalie Potts is back after missing last season because of injury. Nebraska also added size, depth and a top-100 freshman class.

Williams said the work has been underway since June, but the opening of the official practice period gives the program more time to establish chemistry and prepare for the season.

“Just really excited,” Williams said. “I feel like we’ve been kind of at it since June with this group, but to officially move into 20 hours this week and a little bit more time to really be working with this group that’s just really hungry and have been getting after it already, I’m very excited to get things kicked off.”

For Nebraska’s women, the biggest storyline is the return of Potts alongside Prince. Prince’s all-conference season gave the Huskers a centerpiece in the backcourt, and Potts’ return gives Williams another proven option with the potential to reshape Nebraska’s frontcourt.

The programs begin the season at different points in their trajectories. Hoiberg’s team is trying to prove its Sweet 16 run was not a one-year breakthrough. Williams’ team is trying to turn a difficult second half of last season into motivation.

Both coaches, however, are focused on what comes next.
