Vishnu says smile 🦏🧡

In advance of tomorrow's celebration of #WorldRhinoDay, we begin by highlighting 23-year old male Greater One-Horned rhino Vishnu who can be found in the Indo-Malaya region of your Toronto Zoo.

Are you aware? Greater One-Horned Rhinos are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, with only a few thousand remaining in the wild. Habitat loss, fragmentation and poaching continue to threaten their future, but their story is also one of hope.

From fewer than 200 individuals remaining in the early 1900s to more than 4,000 today, the Greater One-Horned Rhino represents an incredible conservation comeback, made possible through decades of dedicated protection and conservation efforts by many partners 🦏

Locally and here at your Toronto Zoo, Vishnu has his own remarkable story. Over the years, our teams have worked together to provide specialized care for his feet from creams and bandages to soft carpeting, wood chips and regraded outdoor spaces. This work was even recognized through our Welfare Wellies competition, showcasing how individualized and proactive care can support an animal’s comfort and well-being.

Vishnu reminds us that being a Guardian of Wild means caring for the individual animals who call our Zoo home while helping build a future for their wild counterparts around the world 🌎

During your next visit, journey through the outer Indo-Malaya region and see if you can spot Vishnu enjoying his indoor or outdoor habitat.

As always, Vishnu has choice in how he uses his space, so there may be times when he chooses to spend time behind the scenes.

Be sure to learn more about Vishnu’s journey and his previous Welfare Wellies story at torontozoo.com/wellies25/booties 🧡🦏
