The mentalis deserves attention when we work with the lower face. Here is why:

1. It influences the appearance of the chin.
When the mentalis contracts, it elevates the soft tissue of the chin and can create the familiar dimpling or “pebbled” appearance of the skin.

2. It affects the lower lip.
The mentalis helps elevate and protrude the lower lip, so its activity is closely connected with the way the mouth and chin move during facial expression.
3. Tension can change how the lower face looks.

When the mentalis is repeatedly or strongly activated, the chin can appear more contracted or tense. Gentle manual work can help reduce temporary muscular tension and encourage a softer, more relaxed appearance.

This is why I always pay attention to the mentalis when working with the lower face. The face is not just skin. Understanding the muscles underneath helps us work more thoughtfully and precisely.
