THE POWER OF THE MODIOLUS

The modiolus is a fascinating fibromuscular structure located near the corner of the mouth. It is not a single muscle. It is a meeting point where several facial muscles interlace and connect.

Muscles associated with this area include the orbicularis oris, buccinator, zygomaticus major, levator anguli oris, depressor anguli oris, risorius, and fibers associated with the platysma.

The modiolus plays an important role in coordinating movement around the mouth. Every time we smile, speak, purse the lips, or change our expression, this small area is involved in organizing the pull of several muscles working in different directions.

When the tissues around the corner of the mouth feel tense or overactive, gentle manual work can help soften that tension and allow the area to feel more relaxed.

For me, working with the face is never about one muscle or one wrinkle. It is about understanding how structures connect and influence movement throughout the face.
