Lately, people have been asking me to say something hopeful. I guess I’m flattered.

But also, I’m floored. Because, well, the search for hope has been rattling around in my head and heart.

I recently revisited Hope in the Dark by Rebecca Solnit. In it, she reminds us:
"Hope is not a prize or a gift, but something you earn through study, through resisting the ease of despair, and through digging tunnels, cutting windows, opening doors, or finding the people who do those things."

In the latest issue of my Dear Good People newsletter, I try to say something hopeful by imagining myself in conversation with Rebecca Solnit.

And while I’m at it, I try to answer a question recently posed by a friend: “I just want to know what show we’re living through. Are we in Scandal, where things are messy, but eventually, the white-hat-wearing gladiators swoop in and fix everything? Or are we in The Hunger Games, where the world is dystopian, the odds are not in our favor, and hope is a scarce resource?”
