Everybody wants to become a better tackler.

Until you ask them how much time they actually spend working on tackling.

During the season, team practice moves fast. Indy periods are short. There are schemes to install, assignments to correct and a game to prepare for. You simply don’t have hundreds of repetitions available to rebuild a skill from the ground up.

And that’s exactly why the time you have outside of team practice matters.

Players will spend hours getting stronger, faster and more explosive, then wonder why they’re still missing tackles.

Because tackling is a skill.

And very often, the tackle isn’t lost because you weren’t strong enough to finish it. It was already lost before contact.

A poor approach. A bad angle. Feet out of position. The body arriving somewhere it can’t efficiently produce force.

That’s what we attacked during PAC Defensive Academy — Clinic #3.

Approach. Footwork. Tracking. Angles. Learning how to organize the body so the athlete can attack the ground and propel himself through the ball carrier.

We didn’t spend three hours trying to create bigger collisions.

We spent three hours developing the positions that allow athletes to arrive at contact ready to win it.

If tackling is one of your weaknesses, don’t wait until you miss one on Sunday to decide you need to work on it.

Use the off-season. Use your individual time. Learn the skill. Practice it. Get corrected. Repeat it until the right response becomes automatic.

You don’t fix missed tackles during the game.
You fix them in the thousands of reps before it.
