Is chasing fall foliage in New England actually worth the hype? There’s a reason why I’ve spent two years chasing foliage so overall yes BUT there are some things I would repeat and things I would do differently.

So if you’re planning your first New England fall road trip, this is the 5-day route I’d suggest to a friend ↓

✈️ DAY 1: BOSTON → NEW HAMPSHIRE
Fly into Boston, pick up a rental car, and drive north toward Lincoln. If you arrive early enough, visit Flume Gorge; otherwise, leave it for the next morning. Keep your arrival day manageable.

🍂 DAY 2: WHITE MOUNTAINS
Spend time along the Kancamagus Highway, then explore Crawford Notch. If Mount Willard is on your list, give the hike its own time instead of squeezing it between every viewpoint you’ve saved.

🏡 DAY 3: STOWE, VERMONT
Head to Stowe and settle in for two nights. Spend the afternoon walking around the village and leave yourself time for an actual sit-down meal. You don’t need to change hotels every night to see beautiful places.

🌲 DAY 4: STOWE + SMUGGLERS’ NOTCH
Explore Smugglers’ Notch and Moss Glen Falls, with a stop at Stowe Cider if that sounds like your kind of afternoon. Stowe Cider and Cold Hollow Cider Mill are different places, so double-check which one you’re saving!

🚗 DAY 5: BACK TOWARD BOSTON
Start south and choose your stops based on current foliage and your departure plans. Woodstock or Mount Sugarloaf can be options, but leave enough time for the drive back.
