Growing up around chronic conflict, harsh parenting, or instability can affect how a child’s brain develops. Research has linked prolonged family stress with differences in brain regions involved in threat detection, emotional regulation, and decision making. These adaptations may help children remain alert in unpredictable environments, but can also make stress and conflict harder to regulate later in life.
