Turn the corner 🧠

One thing i find incredibly frustrating as a coach watching junior basketball in QLD, is the mentality of some coaches who want kids to run plays - at the expense of making reads and decisions.

“Run my play , don’t shoot unless i tell you to do so, and pass to our “best player” 🙅🏻‍♂️

If you waiver from my instruction- you will then get benched 💆🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

You are killing kids learning, and their confidence.

You must allow them to make decisions, even if they make the wrong decision at times. That’s learning, and that’s teaching.

Dribble hand off sets is a perfect example of the issue i see, where kids get open probably 80% of the time on the 2nd hand off in sets, mostly because defensive rotation is horrendous, and very few coaches teach kids to defend.

But - after that 2nd hand off , Even though they have a clear advantage, and can turn the corner, or attack the FT line , kids are afraid to make a mistake, so instead robotically just continue to do more mindless dribble hand offs 🫣

They are afraid if they differ from the “play” and miss a shot , turn the ball over, or make a mistake , they will get benched.

So ….

is it about a coach trying to show people “im a good coach” at all costs , by forcing kids to run an over complicated play (that they probably just copied from a Youtube video 🙄 ) or is it about teaching players to read , react and make decisions. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Then letting them learn to live with the consequences of those decisions (good or bad) 🤔

Development of players is unfortunately all too often being stifled by adult egos, and a desire to prove they are a “good coach” for back slaps and a fist bump from another coach (usually with the same limited mentality and attitude) 🙄

Teach them how to play , show them why they should, how they should, and when they should execute certain things, and then guide them through the process of making mistakes as they put that into practice in live play. 🙏 #basketball #basketballtraining #dreambigworkhard #buzzcity #basketballneverstops
