Today is #WorldMaritimeDay 🚢

Much of everyday life depends on the ocean. From the food we eat and the energy we use to international trade in goods. Around 40% of the world's population lives within 100 kilometres of a coast, so safe seas and resilient coasts matter to everyone.

This year’s theme “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence” is about turning maritime policy into practical results that deliver benefits for the people and the planet.

Here’s how WMO is helping bring this theme to life:

🚢 WMO works closely with the imo_hq to ensure ships and mariners worldwide receive authoritative meteorological warnings and forecasts under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

🚢 WMO and IMO together coordinate the Worldwide Met-Ocean Information and Warning Service, a system which divides oceans into 21 meteorological areas to provide meteorological forecasts and early warnings for international shipping.

🚢 Marine services depend on a global system of ocean observations for weather forecasting and climate predictions. WMO helps strengthen this system by combining ocean and weather data and keeping shipping and coastal communities safe.

🚢 WMO supports its Members in strengthening coastal multi-hazard early warning systems, contributing to building more resilient coastal communities.

The WMO community provides trusted weather, ocean and coastal information that protects lives and livelihoods and supports safe and sustainable activities at sea and along the coast.
