The intensifying El Niño has the potential to deliver major blow to communities and economies across the world, increasing the risk of floods, droughts, and extreme heat in many regions. 

“This El Niño could be stronger than anything we have seen since our monitoring began,” said WMO Secretary-General, Celeste Saulo. 

While its impacts vary across regions, cities are particularly at risk. As extreme heat events become more frequent, the urban heat island effect – where cities absorb and retain more heat than rural areas – can amplify, bringing negative consequences for people’s health, energy systems, infrastructure and productivity. 

At #UNGA81, SG Saulo joined un_partners #GoalsLounge for a timely discussion on 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭, 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐥 𝐍𝐢𝐧̃𝐨, 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. The dialogue with ukhsa's Agostinho Moreira de Sousa, UN-Habitat’s executivedirector_unhabitat, mayortoddgloria of San Diego, USA, and goodable's muhammadlila explored what it takes to prepare cities against the risks of extreme heat. 

SG Saulo highlighted that while the heat itself cannot be prevented, cities and communities can be ready for it. 

City authorities and governments should act before temperatures reach dangerous levels. Meteorological services, health authorities, emergency managers, utilities and community organizations should agree in advance on three things: 

1️⃣ At what forecast threshold will trigger an action? 

2️⃣ Who will act? 

3️⃣ Who must be reached first? 

Strengthening collaboration among different stakeholders is essential to deliver #EarlyWarningsforAll.
