HE STARTED THE WORK. HIS BROTHERS FINISHED IT.

Just three days after 21-year-old Dorian Jackson died while helping save his younger sister from drowning, his fraternity brothers made sure the work he had planned still happened.

According to WXII, Jackson had organized “Building a Better Man” at his alma mater, Dudley High School in Greensboro. The program was created to teach young men practical skills, including how to tie a double Windsor knot, dress for an interview, and find scholarships for college.

Jackson never got to see the event happen.

He died September 19 after his sister’s kayak capsized on Lake Norman. According to WBTV and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Jackson went into the water to help her. She survived. His body was recovered the following day.

But on Tuesday night, the program went forward.

Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s Beta Epsilon Chapter at North Carolina A&T joined Dudley students and carried out the project their brother had started.

Jackson was a third-generation Aggie, a Cheatham-White Scholar, a senior studying marketing, and a student leader involved in Alpha Phi Alpha, student government, the Honors College and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund program. According to NC A&T, he had also accepted a position with Wells Fargo after graduation.

He was the oldest of eight children.

There is a lot we say about brotherhood in Black Greek life.

But sometimes brotherhood looks like this:

Your brother had an assignment.
He couldn’t finish it.
So you made sure the work continued.

Dorian started the work.

His brothers finished it.
