EVERYBODY TALKS ABOUT CROSSING. NOBODY TALKS ABOUT COMING BACK.

This weekend, several Divine Nine chapters put the spotlight on a part of Black Greek life that rarely goes viral: reclamation.

According to the Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., local Delta chapters across Virginia’s 757 region gathered Sunday for “Homecoming: Reconnect. Reclaim. Renew.” The event welcomed Sorors who were new to the area, recently reactivated, looking for an alumnae chapter, or simply ready to reconnect with the sisterhood.

Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters were doing the same.

In Frisco, Texas, Omega Alpha Omega hosted “Back in Bloom,” inviting members to “reengage, reconnect & reclaim” their place in the sisterhood.

In Southern California, Tau Tau Omega’s Greenwell 2026 shifted its focus to sisterhood and reclamation, welcoming graduate chapter members, general members and inactive members to reconnect and renew their bonds.

That is worth talking about.

Black Greek social media spends a lot of time showing people entering these organizations.

But the membership is supposed to last long after college.

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national membership page even includes a dedicated “Time to Reactivate” section, acknowledging that “life’s seasons change” while encouraging inactive members to return. AKA currently reports more than 390,000 initiated members worldwide.

So maybe the better question is not:

“Why did you stop being active?”

Maybe it is:

“What would make you feel welcome coming back?”

Because everybody celebrates crossing.

But lifelong brotherhood and sisterhood also have to make room for coming home.
